The LS Swap Power Steering Headache: Solved
One of the most frustrating hurdles when putting an LS engine into a classic Chevy C10 truck is the power steering plumbing.
Your modern LS pump outputs extreme pressure through metric M16x1.5 O-ring ports. However, your classic ’60s-’80s Chevy C10 steering gear was machined for standard 5/8″-18 and 11/16″-18 Inverted Flare fittings. You cannot mix and match these lines. Trying to force standard lines into a metric pump will strip the aluminum threads and cause immediate, high-pressure blowouts.
This kit provides the exact conversion adapters required to transition your entire system to a universal, high-flow -6AN (Army Navy) standard, allowing you to plumb the pressure and return lines seamlessly.
Why PTFE (Teflon) is Mandatory for Steering
Many budget builders try to use standard rubber braided fuel lines for power steering. Do not do this. Power steering pumps can generate pressure spikes exceeding 1,200 PSI during lock-to-lock parking maneuvers. Standard rubber lines will expand, rupture, and spray highly flammable steering fluid across your hot exhaust headers.
This kit includes a dedicated 25-inch 3/8″ Stainless Braided PTFE (Teflon) Hose specifically engineered for the high-pressure side. PTFE does not expand under pressure, providing a stiff, responsive steering feel while eliminating the risk of burst failures.
What’s in the Box (Complete Plumbing Kit)
This kit eliminates trips to the hardware store. It contains every adapter fitting and hose length needed for a standard C10 engine bay layout:
-
1x 25-Inch 3/8″ Stainless Braided PTFE (Teflon) Hose (High-Pressure Side, pre-installed with a -6AN 90° fitting)
-
1x 25-Inch 3/8″ Stainless Braided Rubber Hose (Low-Pressure Return Side, pre-installed with a -6AN 90° fitting)
-
2x M16x1.5 O-Ring to -6AN Adapters (For the LS Power Steering Pump)
-
2x 5/8″-18 Inverted Flare to -6AN Adapters (For Classic Steering Gear)
-
2x 11/16″-18 Inverted Flare to -6AN Adapters (For Classic Steering Gear)
-
1x -6AN 90-Degree Hose Fitting
-
1x Black Econ-O-Fit Hose Clamp/Finisher
🛑 Professional Safety & Installation Warning
-
System Bleeding: After installing these lines, you MUST properly bleed the air from the power steering system by turning the wheel lock-to-lock with the front wheels off the ground before starting the engine. Starting an LS pump dry or with trapped air will cause severe cavitation, burning up the pump bearings in seconds.
-
PTFE Assembly: If you need to cut the PTFE high-pressure line to a custom length, ensure you use the proper olive/ferrule seating technique to prevent high-pressure leaks.
