The “Flashing LED of Death” Diagnosis
The DeWalt DCD791 (Drill/Driver) and DCD796 (Hammer Drill) are premium 20V MAX XR Brushless tools. Instead of relying on physical carbon brushes to transfer power, they use a highly advanced electronic control module (ECM) to fire the magnetic coils in the motor stator.
While this makes the drill incredibly powerful and efficient, the electronics are vulnerable to extreme heat and moisture. If you push the drill too hard through dense concrete, or if sweat and rain bypass the handle casing, the ECM shorts out.
The classic symptom of a blown DeWalt control board is the “Flashing LED of Death.” You pull the trigger, the work light turns on (and might flash), but the chuck remains dead still. The battery is fine, and the mechanical gearbox is fine, but the electronic brain has fried.
Why You Can’t “Just Replace the Switch”
Many guys open up their DCD796 expecting to unscrew a broken $10 trigger switch. That is not how modern brushless technology works.
To protect the electronics from job site vibration, DeWalt hardwires the variable speed trigger, the control board, and the copper-wound stator together, and seals the connections in thick potting epoxy. You cannot separate them. If the switch goes bad, or if the stator burns up, you must replace the entire unified circuit.

The 15-Minute Bench Rebuild
Do not throw away your expensive bare tool. Rebuilding the electronics is a simple swap:

Remove the Rotor: Open the clamshell housing. Pull the combined motor and gearbox out. Pull the magnetic rotor out of the center of your old burnt stator.

Insert into the New Stator: Slide your original rotor into the center of the new N438606 stator. The strong magnets will snap it into place.

Route the Wires: Drop the new switch, control board, and stator into the plastic housing. Critically important: Route the thin LED light wires and the main battery terminal wires exactly through their plastic retention channels so they do not get pinched when you close the case.
🛑 Essential Risk Management Disclaimer
Always remove the 20V lithium-ion battery before opening your power tool. The capacitors on the brushless control board can retain a charge. When seating the magnetic rotor into the new stator, keep your fingers clear of the edges, as the strong neodymium magnets will pull the parts together violently and can pinch your skin. Ensure the plastic reverse lever is seated correctly on top of the new switch before screwing the housing together.
